Rwanda partners with Chinese firm to grow ICT sector

Rwanda’s ministry of youth and ICT has partnered with Chinese technology firm China ComService to bolster ICT uptake in the country while tapping the use of technology to grow the economy and create employment.

The Chinese firm is mandated with providing one stop services in the ICT sector, including planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, investment and financing.

The partnership will among others create a high-capacity fiber optic ring network interconnecting the EAC capitals, and interconnected with ICT network infrastructure of EAC neighboring countries, building a data center with high capacity and improving information security in Rwanda, among others.

Josephine Nyiranzeyimana, the principal senior technologist in charge of private sector development in MYICT, said the ministry welcomes this partnership that will improve the existing ICT technology.

“Working together with such an experienced ICT and technology company, we are expecting that the ICT sector in Rwanda will be boosted and that it will positively affect other sectors for sustainable development,” she said

Wily Wang, business manager of the China Comservice, said that it is a privilege for the company to operate in a country which has demonstrated a strong will to become the ICT and technology innovation hub in the region.

“We hope that with the conducive environment, we will be able to bring the ICT at an advanced level. Also, building the interconnectivity between the capital cities of the EAC countries will benefit business activities in these countries to achieve more economic development,” he remarked.

In line with the MoU, further studies will identify the projects that need a boost and determine the budget of each project.
