[Uganda] Nile Breweries targets 800 retailers with training on running successful beer businesses

Uganda beer maker Nile Breweries Limited is investing in training its retailers how to run successful business from selling beer as it seeks to share its growth strategy with its distributors.

The training programme which takes four days encompasses four models including Managing Personal Finances, Basic Business Skills, Running My Beer Business; and Responsible Retailing and Environmental Awareness.

The beer maker intends to train 800 trainers this year.

NBL Corporate Affairs Manager, Onapito Ekomoloit said the programme, dubbed Retailer Development Programme, is meant to create a thriving world in which all those who deal with NBL share the growth of the company.

“We consider retailers, the roots of our market strength and need them to be as efficient as we are. We have witnessed fantastic growth to become Uganda’s beer market leader, crowned by establishing the second brewery in Mbarara three years ago,” he said

This is the programme’s second year as 352 retailers were trained in 2015 and NBL hopes to train 800 this year.

Of the 50 retailers trained in Ggaba, Ibrahim Kyevuga said he has learnt a lot especially how to manage money, marketing, and the benefits of insurance.

“In the past, my expenses have been higher than my income. Under money management, I have learnt the importance of making a budget, using an income statement and record keeping,” said Kyevuga, who added that he learnt the purpose of banking. He said he would open an account for the business in DFCU bank.

Globally, SABMiller wants to train half a million retailers and 5700 retailers in Uganda by 2020.
