Malawi Posts Corporation announces measures to curb postal crime
In a move meant to tighten security measures and tame postal crime, the Malawi Posts Corporation has announced a raft of measures that ensure that only legal items pass through the post.
According to Postmaster General Andrew Kumbatira MPC is working to ensure that criminals do not use Malawi as a conduit for contraband goods. He said MPC is committed to ensuring that its staff members are knowledgeable on ways to detect illegal items.
“Much as trade is important for the development of the country, we need to ensure that only legal goods go through the post. Allowing our country to be a conduit for harmful substances may damage our reputation,” Kumbatira said.
He observed that as technology advances, criminals are also devising new ways of ensuring that they transport illegal substances from one part of the world to the other.
“As such, knowledgeable and skilful employees are a critical ingredient in detecting harmful substances. We want to send a strong message out there that there is no passage for dangerous substances in Malawi,” Kumbatira said.
Kumbatira said the newly launched national identification programme will also help the Corporation to know its customers and in the process illegal transactions.
“With the National Identity System, we will be confident on who we will be dealing with unlike the current situation where anybody could just claim to be a Malawian,” he said.
