KQ records 35% domestic passenger growth

Buoyed by increased capacity frequencies, and Malindi as renewed destination in the domestic market, Kenya Airways has announced a 35% growth in passenger volumes in its domestic routes over the Christmas New Year month of December.

In a statement issued by the national carrier today, the airline’s Chief Operating Officer Mr. Bram Steller attributed the growth in the domestic passenger traffic to a positive uptake of recently increased capacity  and more frequencies as if on “Shuttle” on Mombasa on its domestic routes.

“We are delighted with the positive response that our customers have shown towards increased capacity plus the shuttle type frequencies in various domestic destinations that we operate,  further reaffirming that our continued focus to grow the domestic market is paying off”, said Steller.

Last month, Kenya Airways responded to the growing demand for air travel to the Coastal city of Mombasa to satisfy holiday maker’s needs by increasing the frequency of daily flights from 7 to 10 in the weekend even 12 and just before and after Christmas as many as 16 flights daily to Mombasa.

Apart from increased demand for air travel to the coast during the just ended festive season, Mr. Steller said that the increase of frequency to Kisumu to 4 flights per day, the reopening of the Malindi route as well as the introduction of a dedicated service to the coast dubbed the ‘Mombasa Shuttle’ have led to the current increase in domestic passenger traffic. Kenya Airways recorded in December almost double number of Domestic flights compared to December 2009.

He said the airline was fully committed to offering a superior, value-driven product that gives travelers a reason to choose Kenya Airways over the competition. “We’ve already seen very strong customer response to our more flexible and aggressive pricing strategy and continued focus on customer service excellence plus On Time Performance, resulting in record bookings over the past month”, he said.

Mr. Steller added that Kenya Airways would consistently remain on a drive to build its fleet and to grow operational efficiency for both passengers and the airline.  “To this end, we have acquired additional aircraft including 2 Boeing 737-300 and 2 Embraer 170s, and recently our first Embrear 190 to meet the growing demand for both domestic and regional services”, said Steller.
