KCB invests Kshs 8.7m in East African Golf Tour 2011 Series
KCB Group today announced a sponsorship deal of Kshs 8.7 million for the East African Golf Tour 2011 Series. The prize money for the winners will include a bonus for the best placed professionals in the KCB order of Merit. The bank has sponsored the tour for the last four seasons, first as the KCB Pro-Am Tour in Kenya and last year as a regional tour.
“Our objective is to continue to grow this championship to a level where it will attract top regional and continental golfers to Kenya hence promoting KCB Group as a continental brand and Kenya as a destination for golf tourism,” said Dr. Tony Githuku, KCB Divisional Director Technology. The tour, which involves both amateur and professional golfers, covers eight months and promises competitive and attractive tournaments in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
The KCB East African Golf Tour – Kenya’s premier golf championship modeled along the lines of the Sunshine, Asia, and European and US PGA tours – comprises three regional events in Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda with a prize fund of KShs1 million each. The other events will enjoy a prize fund of KShs 1 million for Muthaiga and KShs 500, 000 each for Nakuru, Nyanza and Thika. The tournament recognizes KCB’s profile as a regional bank with a vision to be the preferred Financial Solutions provider in Africa with Global Reach said Githuku adding:” It aims at promoting and maintaining the international standards of golf in the country and region.”
This year’s tournament comprises eight events, featuring Thika, Muthaiga, Nyanza and Nakuru golf clubs in Kenya and Arusha Gymkana Golf Club in Tanzania, Kigali Golf Club in Rwanda and Uganda Golf Club in Uganda. The Grand Finale will take place in August at the Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa.The calendar commences in February with the first KCB East African Golf Tour competition, the KCB Biashara Club Invitational, being held at the Thika Golf Club to be followed by the KCB Advantage Banking Challenge at the Muthaiga Golf Club in March and the KCB S&L Mortgages Classic in Nyanza Golf Club in April.
Other competitions are the KCB Bank Tanzania Open at the Arusha Gymkana Golf Club in May, the KCB Bank Rwanda Open at the Kigali Golf Club in May, the KCB Corporate Banking Open at the Nakuru Golf Club in June, and the KCB Bank Uganda Open in Uganda Golf Club in July, culminating in the grand finale in August. The partnership between KCB and the Professional Golfers of Kenya started in 2007.
The bank spends Kshs 23 million annually to sponsor Rugby, Basketball, Volleyball Women and Football teams. This is besides the sponsorship of the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) series and the Athletics Kenya Cross Country Meets cum National Finals.
