Jubilee Insurance nominated for two Africa Business Awards
Jubilee Holdings Limited has received two key nominations at the 2011 Africa Business Awards. Chairman Mr Nizar Juma is a front runner in the coveted ‘Business Leader of the Year’ category, while Jubilee has also been shortlisted for the ‘Award for Good Corporate Governance’.
The prestigious award, now in its fourth year, attracts entries from leading companies across the continent and has achieved a globally recognized status.
Speaking after receiving news of the nomination, Mr Juma said it was a humbling recognition of Jubilee’s innovative strategy and business model, which has made it the number one insurance company in East Africa for three consecutive years. “This nomination is for the Jubilee team across all five of the East African countries in which we operate, because success, and more importantly sustained success, is all about the team.”
He continued, “As an affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, Jubilee Holdings abides by the highest levels of transparency, accountability and integrity in its operations. It is a tribute to this group and to its founder, that we can be recognized for our ethics in corporate governance in an economy where little is achieved without the proverbial brown envelope.” Winners will be announced at a ceremony and gala dinner on June 22 at The Landmark Hotel, London.
Mr Juma has been Group Chairman of Jubilee Holdings Ltd since 2004, a period in which the company has achieved tremendous growth and expansion across East Africa. The nomination also comes at a time Jubilee, which has subsidiary insurance companies in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Mauritius, is undertaking an ambitious expansion strategy that will see its operations in 12 African markets by 2014.
Mr Juma said Jubilee’s Corporate Governance statement includes an elaborate anti-fraud policy, and that the company has invested in automated systems to ensure compliance. Jubilee is the only ISO certified insurance group listed on all three East Africa bourses – The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange and Uganda Securities Exchange. Its regional offices are highly rated on leadership, quality and risk management and have been awarded an AA- in Kenya and Uganda, and an A+ in Tanzania.
This year’s award’s selection boasts an impressive list of African contenders with several newcomers promising the judging panel a challenging exercise selecting the final winner for each category. This is the first year that Jubilee submitted entries into the awards, making the nomination a milestone. Organised by IC Publications, publishers of the African Business magazine, the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), and BusinessinAfrica Events, the African Business Awards brings together prominent business leaders, entrepreneurs, heads of state and other high-ranking government officials from across the world to celebrate the achievements and successes of those who have played a pivotal role in driving Africa’s economic development forward.
