Is East Africa Becoming Australia’s Greatest LNG Competitor?
Australia's export of LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) is facing stiff rivalry from oil and gas exploration companies in East Africa amid the whopping 24 oil discoveries made from just 27 test wells within the region.
In a recent report by The Australian, it was learnt that offshore wells in Tanzania and Mozambique had experienced extraordinary exploration success, with 100 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas reserves discovered since mid-2010.
Oil and gas exploration companies in East Africa even said there is the potential to double that figure. While Australia currently exports 25 million tons of LNG per year, East Africa is reportedly planning to export 36 million tons annually.
According to John Hirjee, Energy Analyst from Deutsche Bank, "East Africa has been touted as the next major theme in global LNG supply, given the size of the resources"
East Africa Oil & Gas Conference taking place in London, 1-3 October 2012 will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from the key decision makers from East Africa and find out about gas projects and investment opportunities in the region.
Mozambique will be represented by Tavares Martinho, Senior Representative to the Chairman of National Oil Company of Mozambique who will speak about current projects for LNG and gas landscape in Mozambique. Martinho will be joined by Nuno de Oliveira, CEO of the Petromoc (Petróleos de Mo?ambique SA) who is set to assess infrastructure needs and plans in Mozambique.
Tanzania’s Minister for Energy & Minerals, Hon Sospeter Muhongo will deliver an update on Tanzanian gas opportunities in the rift basins of Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, Selous, Kisangire, Mandawa as well as other deepwater opportunities.
H.E. Sinknesh Ejigu, Ethiopia’s Minister of Mines will address the growing potential of the East African region and the vast opportunities for regional and international investors.
Sumayya Athmani, Managing Director of National Oil Corporation, Kenya is to analyse the potential for onshore and deepwater opportunities, especially Block 14T as well as discuss the role of the Kenyan NOC in petroleum exploration and the new legislative outlook.
The event is supported by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines, Ministry for Energy & Minerals, Tanzania, National Oil Corporation, Kenya, Mozambique’s ENH (National Oil Company of Mozambique) as well as Petromoc and is expected to bring together more than 300 top executives, decision-makers and leaders in the field from countries around the region and internationally.
