Glo Nigeria wins big at Beacon of ICT Awards
Next generation network, Globacom, was the biggest winner over the weekend at the annual Beacon of ICT Awards which was held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
According to Communications Week Media, organisers of the award and publishers of Communications Week magazine, Globacom was voted best in three award categories through an online poll conducted from November last year to March 15, 2016.
Most respondents voted Globacom as for the “Internet Company of the Year” award, “Best GSM Company of the Year” award and the “Enterprise Solutions Provider of the Year” award.
Communications Week said that Globacom’s subscriber acquisition rate in the year under review was responsible for making the company the Internet Company of the Year. They referred to industry statistics which showed that 53% of new Internet subscribers in the last 12 months opted for Glo as evidence of the company’s emerging status as the leading operator in the data market.
Globacom emerged the Enterprise Solutions Provider of the Year as a result of its end-to-end backbone infrastructure and customer-centric business solutions which endeared it to several industrial clients.
The media organisation also explained that Glo won the GSM Company of the Year as a result of “its continued pioneering role in Nigeria’s telecom space in terms of innovation and service quality”.
The awards event was presided over by former Executive Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe. The event also saw Zenith Bank, Vodacom, Rack Centre, DHL, GT Bank, Phase 3 Telecoms and Wakanow winning in different other categories.
The Beacon of ICT Awards was instituted in 2010 to reward the vision and enterprise of individuals and companies that have contributed to the growth of the ICT industry in a particular year. This year’s award ceremony was the 7th in the series.
In the 2015 edition, Globacom similarly won three awards: the Best Telecoms Company of the Year, Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year and Undersea Cable Company of the Year.
