Egypt and WFP celebrate the first Africa day for school feeding

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt is collaborating with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Egypt to celebrate the First “Africa Day For School Feeding” on Thursday 10 March 2016 with the support of Ministries of Education and Social Solidarity and the participation of the Ministries of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and Health and Population.

Attending the celebration that marks the first Africa Day For School Feeding is WFP Ambassador Against Hunger Arab actress Hend Sabry. Ms Sabry has been advocating school feeding in the region to draw attention to the positive impact this project could have on the lives of children and ultimately their countries.This year marks the first Africa Day For School Feeding highlighting the African Union coming together to recognize school meals as the world’s most widely-used social safety net.

The Government of Egypt announced that a national school feeding strategy is a current priorityon the state’s agenda. The overall objective of the strategy is to provide guidance on how to develop and implement an expanded national school feeding programme that will eventually cover all government schools across the country in the context of both acting as a productive safety net as well as a fiscally sustainable investment in human capital to fit in the government’s endeavour to achieve “Education for all.”

The Egyptian Strategy on School Feeding is aligned with the 2030 agenda in particular SDG2 on ending hunger achieving food security and improving nutrition.

WFP in Egypt is supporting more than half a million children and their families through school meals projects dedicated especially for those who are most in need. School meals provide a critical safety net encouraging more regular attendance in schools and are a key investment in millions of people’s futures local economies and reducing hunger across the globe.
