Dr. Kenneth Tarus appointed acting CEO and Managing Director of Kenya Power

Kenya’s power distributor Kenya Power has appointed Dr. Kenneth Tarus as its acting Managing Director and CEO. He replaces Dr. Ben Chumo who has been at the helm since 2014 and is exiting after attaining the government’s mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

The company’s board has tried to extend Dr. Chumo’s tenure but this was quashed by the Labour Relations Court when it ruled in favor of activist Okiya Omtata’s petition barring the Board from recommending a term extension to the Energy Cabinet Secretary.

Speaking during the announcement, Tarus said he is optimistic of steering the company to greater heights, and carry on the transformation work Chumo had started.

Kenya Power Chairman, Kenneth Marende, says the Board is confident that everything will run smoothly under Tarus watch, as recruitment for a substantive CEO begins.

“Tarus has over 20 years’ experience in leadership and management with five in the energy sector that include Rural Electrification Authority,” said Marende.

Tarus has served as Kenya Power’s General Manager, Finance for two years.
