[Angola] Benguela - Salt Production Increase Depends On More Investments

The provincial director of Fisheries in Benguela, José Gomes da Silva, admitted that the increase of raw salt production levels in Baía Farta municipality, currently ranging between thirty and forty thousand tons per year to 170,000 tons by the year 2017, depends on large investments.

Speaking to Angop, José Gomes da Silva said the plan of the sector foresees a production of 170,000 tons by the second half of 2017, but he warns that this goal will only be achieved if there are projects with financial viability for the South of Baía Farta, where the salt-pans are located.

Considering insufficient the current production of thirty to forty thousand tons, he said there is a project to open salt-pan in this location, which will have the capacity of 50,000 tons per a year, which still awaits funding for its effective implementation.

He added that there is a need for more large-scale salt production, by opening more salt-pans and the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing ones in Baia Farta, to meet the population's needs.

José Gomes da Silva also pointed out that another objective to increase the production is gradually to reduce the import of salt, which has been made to supply the consumer market.
