[Algeria] Consumerism drives record issuance of vehicle import licenses

In what points to growing consumerism and a boom in key sector of Algerian economy, the country’s ministry of Trade has indicated that it has issued 225 licenses for the import of vehicles, cement and reinforced concrete in 2016.

According to the Ministry, the setting up of the Inter-ministerial Commission in charge of Licenses Issuance has made the process smooth according to citizen’s feedback.

 Regarding the vehicles, 40 licenses were given, but the quota was raised to 98,374 units during 2016, said the same source.

The initial quota of car import was had been fixed at 152,000 units for 2016 before being reduced to 83,000 units worth a value under one million dollars.

But in response to the operators’ plea, the commission accepted to increase the quota by 15,374 units. Concerning the Gray Portland Cement, 93 import licenses were issued for a contingent of 2.75 million tons over 2016 while it was originally set at 1.5 million tons.

As for the reinforced concrete, 92 import licenses were granted for a quota of 2.6 million tons while the contingent had been earlier set at 2 million tons. The imports of vehicles, cement and reinforced concrete are ruled by import license regime since January 2016.
